[atrb=background,http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy35/BaileeDanielle3/Survivor%20Guilt/mer2.png] [scrolly:h(391),w(235),sy] The full moon washed over a lonely rock precipice jutting out of the hillside, bare of the evergreen forests that covered the surrounding territory. It was shortly past midnight, and the stars were shining brighter than they ever had before, or so it seemed to Mercury. His gray fur gleamed like spun silver in the pale light of the night sky as he sat, deep in thought, on the ledge. It provided the Novelle alpha with the best view of the land he reigned over. Despite the beauty around him, however, Mercury's eyes remained cold and gray as the stone he stood on. It was obvious that he was oblivious to the natural harmony of the world around him. [/scrolly]Mercury was never one to care about beauty. He was selfish sometimes, and preferred to keep to himself anyways. Physical appearances meant nothing to him, though he was prideful of his own. Tonight, however, the way he looked was the furthest thing from Mercury's mind. As he stared out over his territory, he remembered. He remembered his father, Marshall, the alpha of the troop before him, and his 'untimely' death. He remembered his mother, Destinae. She had been beautiful- even her name had a lovely, romantic sound to it. Too innocent and sweet to be considered sexy, but beautiful nonetheless. Her death had been an accident, his troop believed. And that was the way Mercury preferred to keep it. He sat down on the precipice, curling his tail around his paws. He was not upset by his parents' deaths, or the fact that he had been the one to carry them out. Marshall had been unfit to rule, and Destinae had simply known too much. It was for the good of the pack that he had become leader- though they needn't know that he had a role to play in the loss of their former alpha and alphess. Mercury's steel gray eyes turned upward slightly, watching the expanse of stars above him. He wondered if any of his troop were out hunting at a time like this. They'd better be. Good night hunting opportunities should not be wasted. He made a mental note to personally see to it that every fox who had wasted such a good opportunity was promptly put in their rightful place, as he liked to call it. It wasn't anything too gruesome or horrifying- simply a few new scars on the offender's flank to teach them not to repeat their mistakes. It was rare that they did, after feeling the bite of his teeth. He wasn't a cruel leader, however- just strict. True, he may have been prejudiced. He wasn't normally lenient on foxes with powers, but not because he thought they were worth less or more than he. Mercury just didn't like them. They were too unpredictable, especially to have in his troop. Of course, he let them into the troop as easily as he would a fox without any such powers, as his father and the other alphas before him had- but he ensured that foxes with powers were taught their place a little more often than the others. It was just the way of things, Mercury thought. Sighing deeply, Mercury continued to watch over his troop. He could hunt later- for now, he would simply keep guard. They had been attacked frequently enough by the other troops to keep him constantly vigilant and on the defensive. But he knew it wouldn't last long. Soon, he would be on the offense. Mercury was sure of that. ________________________ something's getting in the way, 602 words. something's just about to break, open. i will try to find my place, 'unwell' by matchbox twenty. so tell me how it should be, my first ever mercury post, and a long one at that! xD |
